MCC’s CAAHEP accredited hybrid program, with online lectures, on-campus labs, and clinical hospital experience, provides comprehensive training in surgical technology, giving you the knowledge and skills you need to enter and excel in this dynamic and rewarding field. Our CST-certified instructors will guide you through the ins and outs of surgical procedures, anatomy and physiology, sterilization techniques, and much more.

Curriculum

The Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology program prepares competent surgical technologists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

The program curriculum prepares students to sit for the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Coursework includes:

  • Medical Terminology
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology
  • Introduction to Pharmacology
  • Microbiology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Introduction to Surgical Technology
  • Surgical Instrumentation
  • Perioperative Procedures
  • Surgical Anesthesia
  • Surgical Technology Lab
  • Surgical Procedures for General, GYN, GU, and all major specialties.
  • Surgical Technologist Certification (CST, NBSTSA) Review and Prep
  • Extensive Clinical externship rotation (min. of 120 clinical cases) at Chicagoland area hospitals and/or medical centers
Certifications

Graduates of our AAS in Surgical Technology program are eligible to sit for the following nationally recognized industry certifications:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Certified Sterile Processing Tech through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
Career Outlook

Surgical Techs are in high demand! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 6% job growth in surgical technology is projected from 2021–20311. Graduates may secure jobs in labor and delivery departments, inpatient/outpatient surgery centers, hospital surgery departments, physicians’ offices and central supply departments.

STERILE PROCESSING CERTIFICATE

Behind every successful surgery is a skilled Sterile Processing Technician! Are you ready to become an essential part of the healthcare team? It only takes 40 weeks!

Our comprehensive Sterile Processing program offers expert training in instrument sterilization, infection control, and much more. With hybrid lectures, hands-on labs, and clinical experience at one of MCC's affiliated clinical sites, you'll be well-prepared to enter a new career in less than a year.

Curriculum

Sterile Processing program is designed to present the advanced concepts and principles for developing skills and competencies required for infection prevention and control in the sterile processing department in healthcare facilities like hospitals and medical centers. Upon successful completion of the program, the students will be eligible to sit for a national certification exam with CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution).

Coursework includes:

  • Fundamentals of Sterile Processing
  • Principles of Aseptic Techniques
  • Sterile Processing Technology
  • Quality Assurance, Inventory Management, and Recordkeeping
  • Sterilization Practices
  • Clinical externship rotation at Chicagoland area hospitals and medical centers
Certifications

Graduates of our Sterile Processing program are eligible to sit for the Certified Sterile Processing Tech industry certification through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Career Outlook

Hospitals cannot function without Sterile Processing Techs! According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, medical equipment preparers, including sterile processing technicians, can expect a job growth of 6% from 2021 to 2031. This is as fast as the national average for all occupations. This growth might be because of an aging population that needs more health care services. Facilities that often hire sterile processing technicians include:

  • Outpatient care centers
